Women at the Center: Climate Change, Food Security and Global HealthPAI partnered with the Minneapolis-based Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy (IATP) to co-host an event Women at the Center: Climate Change, Food Security and Global Health on Monday April 5th in at Lucia’s in Minneapolis, MN. Twin City Representatives McCollum (D, MN-4th) and Ellison (D, MN-5th) sit on key committees that oversee the funding and policy for international programs, including FP/RH. Click here to read more.
In 2007, PAI’s report The Shape of Things to Come found that countries with very young and youthful age structures are more likely to experience outbreaks of civil conflict and undemocratic governance. On April 2nd, PAI released a series of three case studies building on that research with in-depth country analysis of demographic trends and development in Haiti, Uganda and Yemen.
Despite their different settings, each of these countries has in common the youngest age structure in its region. They illustrate the challenges of security, governance and individual welfare faced by nations at the beginning of the demographic transition, as well as the opportunities that lie ahead if governments and their partners implement comprehensive and forward-looking policies to shape demographic trends. There are over a dozen estimates of the financial resources needed to improve reproductive health used by the reproductive health community. Lack of understanding of estimates currently in circulation can lead to fragmented advocacy and weak financial prioritization of reproductive health. Population Action International is releasing a report, Funding Common Ground: Cost Estimates for International Reproductive Health to help advocates and policymakers better understand the funding needed to achieve the ICPD and MDG goal of universal access to reproductive health. A clear sense of financial requirements is essential to carry out policy advocacy and plan to fulfill unmet needs.

Celebrating Mothers Around the GlobeTo the millions of mothers around the world, PAI says Happy Mother’s Day! PAI honors these mothers and recognizes the struggles they endure in creating the best possible life for their children. For forty-five years, PAI has helped women around the world achieve healthy lives and economic security by working to ensure that every person has a right and access to sexual and reproductive health. More than half a million women die every year during pregnancy and childbirth because they do not have access to the simplest of health services and supplies. PAI staff works tirelessly to prevent these tragedies from occurring. This Mother’s Day consider making a gift to PAI in honor of your mother.
