Supply Initiative
In January 2003, a small group of organizations formed a coalition called the Supply Initiative to formally embark on its first phase to ensure the “Call to Action” was upheld and recognized. The initiative followed a three pronged approach:- PAI, served as the project’s fiscal manager and leader in its advocacy measures, with the assistance by the German Foundation for World Population (DSW), which supported the group in communications efforts;
- John Snow Inc Research Training Institute promoted the Reproductive Health Interchange (RHI) which tracks daily orders and shipments RH supplies
- PATH, established an effective donor stream for supplies, which led to the Reproductive Health Supplies Coalition.
Accomplishments:
- Establishment of the RH Interchange (RHI), a web based portal for contraceptive procurement and shipping information. The RHI now contains over US $600 million of order and shipment activity for over 55 countries from the world’s top three major donors: the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) and are in the process of finding ways to include tracking of smaller donors on a global basis.
- Facilitating Donor Co-ordination with the RH Interchange
- Successful management of the Reproductive Health Supplies Coalition (RHSC) has built sufficient donor momentum on RH supplies that the Coalition now has an established Secretariat in Brussels, Belgium
- Resource mobilization and awareness raising activities have resulted in a steady increase in media coverage of the RH supplies issue, increased availability of advocacy resources and materials, improved participation and investment by key stakeholders and partners, increased numbers of donor governments contributing to RH supplies and increased volume of funding.
- An outcome of the Supply Initiative is the second phase of the Supply Initiative, Project Resource Mobilization and Awareness (or Project RMA) that continues to conduct advocacy on RH supplies related issues.
PAI Subgrants
In 2006 PAI identified regional and global partners who were interested in increasing their involvement in the RH supplies issues. These partnerships help to increase awareness of supply shortages and mobilize support for improvements to the financing and distribution of supplies.
