PAI Launches New People in the Balance Interactive Database

Just in time for Earth Day, Population Action International has updated its People in the Balance: Population and Natural Resources at the Turn of the Millennium interactive database.

Examples of the Data Include:

  • Between 2.6 billion and 3.2 billion people could potentially be living in either water-scarce or water-stressed conditions by 2025.
  • The number of people living in countries where cultivated land is critically scarce is projected to increase from 464 million in 2005 to between 595 million and 742 million in 2025.
  • In 2005 about 2.2 billion people will live in 45 countries with less than 0.1 hectare of forested land per capita, an indicator of critically low levels of forest cover.

People in the Balance: Population and Natural Resources at the Turn of the Millennium, published in 2000, was the tenth in PAI's series of natural resource studies. With the then-latest data on five of the six resources covered and colorful graphics, the 32-page booklet was intended as a concise resource for environmentalists, scientists, teachers and advocates, as well as policymakers. The publication is now out of print, but PAI hopes to fully revise and update it for publication in late 2005 or early 2006.

Population Action International (PAI) works to improve individual well-being and preserve global resources by mobilizing political and financial support for population, family planning and reproductive health policies and programs.
