Once again, members of Congress are playing politics with women’s health. Yesterday, the House Appropriations Committee approved a spending bill that would drastically cut funding for contraception, reinstate the harmful Global Gag Rule, and eliminate U.S. funding for the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
Their actions are in direct opposition to their counterparts in the Senate, who last week approved a version of the same bill with a 5 percent bump in family planning funding, including $37.5 million for UNFPA, and language to repeal the Gag Rule once and for all.
Members of Congress will have to battle over the different version of the bill later this year, and reconcile them before the new fiscal year begins on October 1. In order to block the House’s harmful cuts and policy restrictions from getting into the final bill, Senate leaders will need to stay strong. If not, the consequences would be devastating for women around the world.
Family planning champions in the Senate have stood up to ideological, anti-women politicians in the past, and we’re asking them to keep it up. Will you sign our petition to ask Senate leaders to continue standing up against anti-family planning legislation?
