Madagascar is truly a biological treasure—80 percent of its plants and animals are found nowhere else on the planet. However, the island nation also suffers from food insecurity and a rapidly growing population. The result? By the early 2000s, nearly 90 percent of the country’s rainforests had been destroyed by villagers clearing land for agriculture.
PAI highlighted these unique challenges—and the role family planning can play in repsonding to them—in one of our very first films: Finding Balance. That’s why we were so pleased to see this recent blog from our friends at Women at the Center highlighting 25 years of population, health, and environment (PHE) work in Madagascar. PHE is an integrated approach to sustainable development, combining health education and services with attention to conservation and natural resources.
